Wellness

Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) is often associated with older age groups, particularly individuals in their 50s, 60s, or even older. However, the use of hormones can be beneficial across a wider age range, as exemplified by cases starting from as young as 17 years old to patients as old as 87.

Unfortunately, there’s a lingering fear surrounding hormones, largely due to misconceptions. We’ve been conditioned to believe that hormones are inherently hazardous, to be used briefly, and that they increase cancer risk. These notions are misleading. It is crucial to understand and compare the different types of hormones and their specific effects.

Estrogen and Cardiovascular Health

Estrogen, for example, is known to aid in reducing cardiovascular risks, particularly by managing cholesterol levels. This benefit challenges the fear-mongering narratives that have been prevalent for years. By promoting heart health, estrogen can be an essential part of a comprehensive wellness strategy.

Testosterone’s Role and Controversies

Testosterone is another hormone that often creates debate, especially among cardiologists. As the heart is a muscle, testosterone could potentially enhance its functionality, particularly in cases of heart failure. While testosterone can indeed help rebuild and strengthen the heart, it’s part of a larger picture involving various factors. Cardiovascular health involves regular exercise and efforts to maintain and improve heart function.

Muscle Health and Hormones

Hormones play a significant role in not just cardiovascular health but also in muscle development and protection. They contribute to muscle tissue improvement, protection, and overall physical resilience. Understanding these benefits can help dispel the myths that have clouded the conversation about hormones.

Educating and Empowering Through Knowledge

As hormone therapy begins to gain traction and public understanding, it’s important to educate individuals about each hormone, its benefits, and its specific role in health. By taking a proactive approach, health professionals can guide patients through the initial stages of hormone therapy, even in the face of opposing views from other healthcare providers. I often suggest to my patients to allow me 90 days to demonstrate how hormone therapy can positively impact their health.

Hormone replacement therapy, when understood correctly, offers numerous health benefits that extend well beyond the myths and misconceptions surrounding it. With the right guidance and education, patients can make informed decisions to improve their health with hormone therapy as a valuable tool.
